| Hurricane Sandy impacted the Watch Hill area on Monday October 29th through October 30th. During the thirty-six hour operational period of the Hurricane and the resulting storm surge, the dedicated volunteer members of the Watch Hill Fire Department responded to more than fifty emergency calls to assist residents, secure hazardous areas, mitigate hazardous conditions, record and report storm damage, and assess public safety.
The most dangerous and hazadous of these responses was the rescue and removal of an elderly couple during the height of the storm who had called 911 for assistance after they chose to ignore the mandatory evacuation order and remain in their residence.
Other notable responses included securing several large leaking propane cylinders that were floating in the commercial area of Bay Street, rescuing a woman suffering from the effects of carbon monoxide posioning from a generator issue, and cutting and removing multiple trees to open the roads and allow access to the residences.
