WHFD Trains With The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Investigation Unit Accelerant Detection Canine

October 10, 2020

On Wednesday morning, Watch Hill Firefighters partnered with the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Investigation Unit for a unique training opportunity. In July, Investigator Hannah Burnes and her K9 Dream, a two and a half year old yellow lab, graduated from the Connecticut State Police Academy after 6 weeks of intensive training.

Dream is an accelerant detection dog who is trained to sniff out ignitable liquids that may have been used to start a fire.

Being in the Ocean State, Investigator Burnes wanted to make sure Dream was acclimated to working on and around boats. After a brief boat ride around our local waters on Watch Hill Marine 101, Dream trained to find samples placed on our boats and on our docks. She was then rewarded with food after each positive alert.

We are always happy to partner with our other emergency service agencies including the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office and we are looking forward to seeing Hannah and Dream coming back to visit as they continues their training.

Thanks to Investigator Burns for bringing Dream for training and thanks to Lieutenant Koretski and Firefighter Majeika for assisting with the training session.
