By Chief Robert Peacock
April 19, 2020

We are proud to be a partner in this project. Please consider donating your unused C Pap and Bi Pap Machines.

We have already collected fifty-six machines! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

If you have a machine that you are not using and are willing to donate it to this new initiative, please go to www.ventilatorproject,org and follow the directions for preparing the machine for donation including completing the form that is on the website. Then simply stop by the station and leave the machine in the plastic tote box located by the back door. We will then coordinate transporting them to URI.

University of RI researchers are joining designers, doctors, and technologists statewide to collect and refurbish sleep apnea machines for use in hospitals. URI is working with VentilatorProject.Org, the Rhode Island Commerce Corp., the Rhode Island Department of Health, various fire stations, and various hospitals, among others, to collect and refurbish CPAP and BiPAP machines, which are commonly used in treating sleep apnea patients. They are named for the method by which they deliver pressurized air to the patient's airways.

The machines will then be brought to URI, where a group of engineers, Ph.D. students, and other University volunteers 100-members strong will work on them in the Memorial Union Ballroom, which has been turned into a processing space. The team will sanitize, test, document, and refurbish the machines.

The goal is to collect, re-engineer, vet, and document innovative uses of these machines in the care of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
